Guidance Path Surface - (Box of 10no. 400mm x 400mm - Surface Mounted Tactile Paving Tiles).
Guidance Path Surfaces are used to guide visually impaired people along a routes when alternative cues are not available. Alternatively, they are used to guide people around obstacles.
Pedestrians can be guided along a route, either by walking on the tactile surface, or using a long cane.
Unlike the other tactile paving surfaces, guidance paths are for amenity, rather than to serve as a warning of the approach to a hazard.
The profile comprises a series of raised, flat topped bars running in the direction of pedestrian travel. The bars are 5.5mm (±0.5mm) high, 35mm wide and are spaced 45mm apart. There are five bars on a 400mm x 400mm module.
They can be any colour (except for red) and should visually contrast from the surrounding environment. We widely stock the product in buff, yellow or charcoal colours.
Suitable Applications
The use of the guidance path surface is suggested in the following situations:
-
In areas where conventional cues like property lines or kerb edges are not present, such as a pedestrian precinct.
-
When visually impaired individuals require guidance around obstacles, as seen in a pedestrian precinct. However, caution is advised when siting street furniture to prevent potential issues.
-
When visually impaired individuals have a specific need to locate a particular destination
-
At transport terminals to assist visually impaired individuals in navigating between facilities.

Tactile Properties
The product is produced using polyurethane resin with an aggregate to provide durability and slip resistance, also contributing to reduction in fire loads. The aggregates used are either sand or flint.
The tiles are formed to comply with relevant specified profiles (size, position and layout of dimples, ridges, etc). The edges of the tactiles are consistently chamfered to prevent trip hazards.
Slip Resistance
It is not feasible to perform SRV (pendulum) testing on profiled flooring. Slip resistance testing was therefore carried out using the SATRA TM144 test method on a sample of the product.
SATRA's recommendation is that the TM144 test demonstrate a minimum result of 0.4 when tested in dry and wet conditions.
The product achieved minima and mean values of 0.81/0.83 in dry conditions and 0.69/0.73 in the wet.
Wear Resistance and Durability
Frick-Taber testing of the tactile surface has been carried out. This testing was carried out on Surface Mounted Tactile tiles, and conventional concrete tiles.
The Surface Mounted Tactile achieved a volume loss of 1/3 that of the concrete tiles, therefore the abrasion wear rate was approximately 3 times as good as that for the concrete tile tested.
Non Slip Shop's Tactile Paving achieved a “P” wear classification according to EN649.
Cleaning & Maintenance:
The Tactile Paving System is maintainable using conventional floor cleaning methods (brush/ scrub).
Frequency and nature of cleaning should be determined as part of a area specific methodology. The tiles and adhesive are inert against chemical attack from normal cleaning products.
Specific testing has been carried out to demonstrate resistance to damage from the chewing-gum remover product specified by Asset Performance (TASKI TAPI ANTGUM F78 by Johnson Diversey) which is applicable when used within network rail infrastructure.
Health, Safety and the Environment Details
Installation Practice
The installation requires the handling of cured polyurethane tiles, the mixing and application of two-component adhesive and the disposal of waste materials. These are conventional tasks and do not present unusual risks.
Where tiles are required to be cut, this is preferably done using a guillotine, although it is also possible to cut and shape tiles using hand-held abrasive wheel tools.
Typical Safety Precautions
Standard safety precautions such as use of PPE (gloves, eye protection) should be used at all times and are covered in the manufacturer’s method statement, although site-specific assessments and considerations should always be made to suit. Safety data sheets for the two-component adhesive are available on request.
Waste Management & Disposal Practice
Excavation or removal of existing finishes is not generally required prior to installation (unless to regularise uneven levels).
The generation of waste at the installation stage is therefore less than with thicker concrete or ceramic systems which have to be set into the surface.
Debris arising from removal of tiles, spare or offcut tiles and the hardened adhesive are inert waste and do not require special treatment.
Tactile Adhesive Summary
Tactile Adhesive is uniquely formulated for the single purpose of bonding Surface Mounted Tactile Paving tiles to your intended surface.
Following years of experience, we have developed the unique formula which provides a fast curing, reliable and the most resillient solution on the market.
We highly recommend it is essential to use our own specialist tactile adhesive for our own range of tactile paving products. The solution is uniquely formulated to bond the tactiles effectively onto surfaces, otherwise installation will not be effective.

The 2-Part (PU) Adhesive Tubs are competitively priced at £49.99 (+VAT). They are the highest quality product on the market for this application.
PU Adhesive provides an exceptionally strong and highly resistant bond, whilst benefiting from a fast curing time - with all surfaces prepared for use within a 2 hour timeframe.
The moisture-tolerant, solvent free solution benefits from an excellent bond strength - with non-shrink, non-slump properties.
Tactile Adhesive Application Method
The two-component adhesive formula has to be mixed thoroughly prior to application, to provide the correct ratio.
Mix the two seperate components at a slow speed for 2-3 minutes, with a power tool mixer and mixing paddle - until even in colour and consistency is reached.
Once complete, the adhesive should be applied using a serrated trowel and evenly spread over the area which the tactiles will be applied.
Firmly press the tactiles into position, working from the centre across to the edges. Remove excess adhesive and tool to a smooth finish. All equipment should be cleaned immediately after use.
The product should be stored at warm temperatures. If stored in cold conditions, the containers should be warmed prior to mixing.
